What are common symptoms
of Vitamin D deficiency?
With the darkness of fall and winter upon us,
should we be thinking about Vitamin D as possibly
becoming deficient over the winter months
since the sun is a source of our Vitamin D?
Our sources of Vitamin D include light from the sun,
some foods, and supplementation.
When Vitamin D is deficient, it may result in soft bones (rickets) in children and mis-shapen bones (osteomalacia-soft bones) and fragile bones in adults. As osteomalacia progresses, weakness may develop. Because Vitamin D is necessary for proper calcium absorption, low Vitamin D may contribute to symptoms of calcium deficiency such as muscle spasms, cramping, tingling of the limbs, and numbness around the mouth or in the hands and/or feet.
The role of Vitamin D is still being investigated. What is known, is that Vitamin D3 is involved in many biological processes such as immune system modulation (as relating to diseases and cancer), insulin sensitivity and production, hormone and neurotransmitter homeostasis, and is essential for regulating proper calcium levels.
General aches and pains like low back pain, throbbing bone pain, and even muscle weakness may raise the alert in your body by trying to signal you that something is wrong. Are you paying attention to what your body is trying to tell you? However, some of these symptoms may lead to a misdiagnosis of chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or arthritis. Symptoms may include:
~Getting sick or infected often
~Feeling of fatigue and tiredness
~Back pain and bone pain
~Slow wound healing
If you are experiencing signs of depression, irritability, lack of energy, or persisting sadness or anxiety, a deficiency of Vitamin D may be the cause. The “British Journal of Psychiatry” has linked depression to low Vitamin D level. Symptoms may include:
