Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) is an autism spectrum disorder. With Asperger’s Syndrome individuals will usually develop speech on time. AS is a milder form of autism. It is also referred to as high functioning autism. It primarily affects social interaction. Sensory issues (sight, sound, taste, smell and touch) play a large role in the Asperger experience. Asperger’s is characterized by normal to above normal range of intelligence. There is now controversy in the medical community of whether or not Asperger’s Syndrome should be included in the Autism Spectrum Disorder, probably due to the positive characteristics that are associated with people with AS.
