Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified
In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association eliminated the entire category of PDD - NOS and the diagnosis is no longer used.
Then PDD - NOS and other Autism Spectrum Disorders were consolidated into 2 categories.
Below is information prior to 2013.
Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) is a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), and is also considered as an autism spectrum disorder autism disorder (ASD). PDD-NOS is often called atypical autism.
A person may be diagnosed with PDD-NOS when they exhibit some of the behaviors associated with autism, but they do not meet the full criteria. People with PDD-NOS do not have the same symptoms - and the symptoms can vary in severity. Usually, they will have fewer and milder symptoms than those with autistic disorders.
Symptoms may include social and communication difficulties. However, some of their symptoms may be more debilitating. There is no set pattern of symptoms and signs in people with PDD-NOS.
